Restored and Double-Glazed Stairwell

This stairwell is a modern addition to the original house and was created some years ago. Unfortunately the single glazing and double glazed roof panels had failed and leaked, and combined with condensation the internal Rimu joinery had become badly water marked.

Our solution with the client was to re-line the internal joinery with new Rimu and replace the glass with Double Glazing. We used a 28mm unit, giving the maximum insulation with Argon filling. In addition we integrated Laminate glass in the double glazing to reduce UV damage to the carpet and furnishings.

The staircase had been poorly made of MDF and our client wanted a more decorative effect to match the other Rimu joinery. Our solution was to line the existing stairs with solid and veneered Rimu, once we had strengthened it.

These sash windows had suffered from long-term condensation causing black mould on the timber inside. During the process of double glazing it was easy for us to sand the timber to remove the deep-seated mould. Once the windows are re-installed, we put our specially formulated Reviver Oil and Wax Polish on to provide the final finish. Note that the timber hasn't been sanded so much as to remove all the character from the surface and keep the integrity of the home.

New French Doors and Windows were made to upgrade this old Sunroom, Double Glazed of course, and the old leaky single glazed roof panels were replced with double glazing and a special stainless steel flashing was made to order to ensure no future leaks.

Floor Restoration

Stripping Timber Floors

These floors were stripped with Easy Strip to remove old varnish, trodden-in paint and plaster, dirt and grime etc. The stripped timber was then treated with our Wood Reviver, sealed using Shellac and then our special blend of Wax Polish was rubbed into the surface and buffed using an electric buffer.

The result is a very natural looking floor with loads of character in keeping with the ambience of the old Villa.

If the floors were sanded instead of stripped, all the character would be removed from the floor, the patina in the timber would be removed and the most likely there would be traces of borer showing through.

This floor is easy to maintain, will not discolour with UV, will not chip like a polyurethane varnish.

Internal Archway

This internal archway was stripped of paint to show the highly figured Rimu timber used in its construction. The effect it had on the entrance hallway was to draw people in as you enter the property and this ordinary archway that so many of New Zealand homes have became a major feature.

This is what our client said:

"DELIGHTED with the archway..........thank you we are thrilled."

The stairs were covered in a thick black treacley varnish, on the first picture you can see the contrast in colour to the left of the newel post where I had performed a demonstration. You can clearly see the beautiful glow of the Kauri . The stairs were finished with our natural beeswax polish.
The floor was stripped with Easy Strip as oppose to being sanded. This way we kept the natural patination of the timbers with all the historic character it has developed over the years. Our client preferred a polyurethane finish due to the amount of traffic and exposure to the weather as people enter from outside.

Easy Strip launched in Australia

Easy Strip was launched in Australia at the HIA show Melbourne during 7-15 April.
The show was a huge success and just about sold out of Easy Strip. Future orders can be made through Australian distributors Jex Industries Pty Ltd, Box Hill, Melbourne, Tel: 03 9890 0411 or by email to sales@jex.com.au
Many at the show marvelled at the demonstrations when they saw how easy multiple layers of paint came off, and at the low odour of the products. Although Easy Strip is more expensive than conventional strippers typically found in hardware stores across Australia, this was not a barrier to sales with people jostling to purchase and often blocking the aisles.
I guess people want a product that makes life easier and at the end of the day Easy Strip is price competetive because with a conventional stripper you often have to do the job two or three times to get the same result and therefore use more product.

Stripped Hallway and stairs

This hallway has been stripped with a competitors stripper but their finishing products left the timber looking and feeling dry and lifeless. Easy Strip products revived the natural colour and was locked in with our fantastic wax finish.

Even the floorboards were Revived and Waxed without any sanding!!
